Energy Gel FAQs

$2.00 for 50 grams of carbs? What's the catch?

No catch! This is a simple and incredibly effective energy gel.

We know we could charge much more for these gels, but for us to help more athletes effectively fuel their sport, we keep our price as the best carb-to-dollar gel in the world.

We, as athletes, needed a top-quality high carb energy gel that was more affordable, so we made it.

Why 50 grams of carbs?

Depending on the demands of the athlete, consuming 80-120 grams of carbohydrates per hour has been shown to effectively enhance and prolong endurance performance.

Our gels contain 50 grams of carbohydrates in a 2:1 glucose to fructose ratio to support athletes in achieving their fueling goals. More carbs per gel also means less packaging waste, so it is better for the environment too.

What is the Original flavor and why doesn't Carbs Fuel offer other flavors?

The original flavor is bright, sweet, and slightly citrusy; it is neutral enough for athletes to enjoy consuming in hour 1 and hour 6 of their endurance activity.

We may launch products of other flavor variations in the future, but we think our original flavor is exceptional. We are focused on delivering a simple and effective product that helps more athletes effectively fuel their sport.

How many gels should I eat every hour?

Our gel contains 50 grams of carbohydrates. If you are not used to consuming more than 50 grams of carbohydrates per hour, we recommend starting with one gel every 60 minutes.

Gradually work you way towards consuming one gel every 30 minutes as you train your body to be able to consume 100 grams of carbohydrates per hour.

Depending on the intensity and demand of your activity, more or less fueling is required. We recommend listening to your body and how you feel as you increase your carbohydrate intake.

Should I consume this with water?

We suggest to consume our gels with a couple sips of water.

What is the consistency of the Carbs Fuel energy gel?

The Carbs Fuel energy gel has a low viscosity, or thin consistency, thanks to our unique carbohydrate sources and decision to avoid gelling agents.

Why doesn't Carbs Fuel include gelling agents?

We dont use gelling agents like Gellan Gum, Xanthan Gum, or Pectin because we wanted to eliminate the use of any ingredient which could cause stomach problems.

Plus, if it doesn't help your endurance performance, why would we?

Our gels are naturally a great consistency thanks to the carbohydrate volume.

What are the carbohydrate sources in the Carbs Fuel energy gel?

The Carbs Fuel energy gel is a blend of three carbohydrate sources to achieve a 2:1 glucose-to-fructose ratio. The three sources of carbohydrates are maltodextrin, sucrose, and fructose.

Why 2:1 versus 1:0.8 glucose-to-fructose?

Current research suggests the optimal ratio of glucose and fructose, for maximal carbohydrate uptake and minimal risk of GI issues, is between 2:1 to 1:0.8 glucose-to-fructose ratio. As of 2023, current research suggests the 1:0.8 ratio to be the most optimal, however, proper fueling is not black and white. There are numerous other factors to consider which may affect the athlete. Some example factors could be the product's palatability, or the athlete's sensitivities to ingredients like preservatives, and gelling agents. Carbs Fuel thoughtfully selected a 2:1 ratio, instead of a 1:0.8 ratio, for a couple reasons.

  1. Some athletes have a greater sensitivity to fructose, when compared to glucose; we believe the 2:1 ratio will allow a wider breadth of athletes to fuel their sport.
  2. A key aspect to helping more athletes fuel effectively is ensuring it is a product that is palatable and easy to consume. We found the higher fructose concentration in the 1:0.8 ratio created a sweetness profile that was less palatable during our product development. A proper fueling strategy only works if the athlete is excited and able to continue consuming their energy gels late into their activity.
What is the shelf life of a Carbs Fuel gel?

The Carbs Fuel energy gel has a best-by date 24 months past the date of manufacturing. We've achieved a lengthy shelf life by achieving a balance between pH and water activity.

My new go-to. Solved my fueling problem finally!

After over five years of struggling with calories and nutrition in longer events and races, I finally discovered CARBS and tried them. I've used them for all events that I've raced in 2024, and this is the first year in so long that I haven't had rotten gut, bonks, and general difficulty getting anything down in intense racing conditions. I've used plenty of gels and liquid calorie solutions, but the simplicity of CARBS is what caused me to try it. I've always operated on the principal of calories, but the idea of generally just having two of these per hours was what helped simplify my nutrition plan to the point that I wouldn't screw it up when focused on the race itself. The flavor is mildly sweet, but is almost a non-flavor. It sneaks by my taste buds and gets to my belly without drama, and the low viscosity agrees with me. Part of me wonders what makes this different than anything else out there, it can't really be that complicated, but the bottom line is that it works, and I'm going to keep using it. I'm on my 4th box now.

Amazing!

If you are like me you thought, cheap price, cheap product. This couldn’t be further from the truth, high quality ingredients with no gelling agents or preservatives?! Amazing! No palette fatigue either and a surprisingly liquid gel for how many carbs you are getting. My go to product now!

So many things to love about Carbs Fuel!

I'm a marathoner, and these gels have been the answer I've been looking for! I've been experimenting with so many gels. Looking for a gel that is higher than 20-30g of carb, just the right consistency, gives me a boost, and doesn't taste nasty! This fits all those criteria! Side note- I'm a dietitian and I now recommend these.

Eh… you get what you pay for…

It OK. The flavor is ok, not great. One packet as a pre-ride top up of carbs works well. More than that one packet and I get stomach discomfort. Not surprising as it has been proved that straight up carbs in high doses can easily cause stomach discomfort. So now I use this as a pre ride and go with matured while riding…. Hydrogel technology in matured works to combat stomach discomfort. I got what I paid for exactly… inexpensive gels that are not high tech and bound to combat everything we have learned about high carb loading.

Hi Rob! Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback and comments! We appreciate it. We are sorry to hear you are experiencing stomach discomfort when taking more than one of our gels. When formulating our gel, we took the time to consider factors that would minimize the chances of experiencing gut distress. In researching and selecting each ingredient in our formula, we found that the use of preservatives and gelling agents increased the risk of experiencing GI distress, due to allergies or sensitivities, independent of the carbohydrate density. This is why we made a purposeful effort to not include these additives in our final formula. Each company may approach the challenge to minimize gut distress differently, such as the use of the hydrogel technology or isotonic gels, but we found that simply excluding the additives that people may be sensitive to is the best way to minimize the changes of gut distress while still delivering a high amount of carbohydrates. We do acknowledge that there can be challenges with high carb fueling. The most common challenge that people face is that their gut may not be used to absorbing the high densities of carbohydrates. While there may be data to suggest that carbohydrates in high doses can cause gut discomfort, it is more likely the case that the gut is not trained to absorb the amount that is being placed into the GI tract. There is substantial data to support that shows humans are able to absorb 90+ grams of carbohydrates per hour without gut distress, with the correct ratio of carbohydrates. However, the caveat is that the GI tract must be trained to achieve these high fueling levels. If you would like to read more about this topic, feel free to check out our blog: https://carbsfuel.com/blogs/news/gut-training-for-fueling-and-performance. While we realize that everyone has their preferred fueling product types and brands, we believe that the gut can be trained to consume high amounts of carbohydrates without experience GI distress. We set out to simplify the ability to for being to achieve high carb fueling by creating products that are simple to not only reduce the chance of GI distress, but to also be financially obtainable by more people.
